GU5.3 base

Two straight pins, 5.3 mm apart. It runs on 12 volts, through a transformer. See all eight bases

Where it fits

A path with ten halogen spots draws 500 watts. The same path on these LEDs draws 70. That is the case for this bulb, and it is strongest where lights stay on for hours. The shape, the pins and the 38 degree beam match the halogen MR16, so the fixture needs no change. Replace the whole run together and the light looks even from one end to the other.

Check before you buy

  • The fixture runs on 12V through a transformer.
  • The circuit has no dimmer.
  • You are replacing every bulb on the run, or you accept a small color difference next to halogen.

Pick another one if

It is not dimmable, so keep halogen on any dimmed circuit. Some old transformers need a minimum load to work, and a string of 7 watt bulbs may fall under it. If the LEDs flicker after the swap, the transformer is the usual cause. A halogen MR16 gives 800 lumens at 50W, so this LED is the dimmer of the two.

Halogen original

Vinaco MR16 Halogen Bulb, 12V GU5.3

The same GU5.3 base in halogen, 20–50W. It dims on any dimmer and gives off heat.

    Good colour temp

I use tons of these across my landscape lighting so am always looking for bulbs of the "proper" 2700K colour temp, which these are. The 7W rating is helpful for those large trees where a lot of throw is needed.h

MR16 LED Bulb, 7W 12V GU5.3: questions

Will it work with my existing transformer?

The maker says it works with existing 12V transformers. If the lights flicker, the transformer may need more load than a few LEDs draw.

Is the MR16 LED as bright as a 50W halogen?

The maker rates it as a 50W replacement at 450 lumens. Our 50W halogen MR16 is rated at 800 lumens, so expect softer light.

Which color should I pick for a garden?

2700K gives the warm look of halogen on plants and stone. 5000K is whiter and reads brighter on driveways and work areas.
